Patch 1.2 coming soon, including tutorial

Projekt W TutorialRight now I’m working on the next patch, version 1.2 for Projekt “W”. This patch will mostly contain changes, especially to the user interface that make the game “faster” too navigate. A lot of actions will also be triggered by double-clicking items or by pressing keys, instead of having to select stuff and to click on a different button. That should make the gameplay experience more smooth.
The patch will also add some more information, for example a new window will now pop up if you have finished research, instead of just adding an easy-to-overlook newsitem. And if you now loose or defend a region against the AI, a double-click on the news item will show you all losses that occured in that battle, and there is now also a second territorial map stored so you can quickly compare what regions changed their owner. These are just some of the changes, but in the end they should make up for a much more pleasing gameplay experience.

And one thing a lot of people asked for will also be in this patch : a tutorial. The game is complex (though there are much more complex turn-based games out there) so many people don’t know what to do and not everyone is willing to put hours into trying out what building-constellation works, so I decided to put a tutorial in the game. It runs inside the game (no external PDF-file like the manual) and will carry you trough the game’s main elements step-by-step. Click on the screenshot for this news-posting to see a first glimpse at how it’ll look alike. I hope that I can attract more people to play Projekt “W” with this new functionality.

And as for the date of the patch : I plan for this weekend or sometimes next week.

Projekt “W” – Patch 1.1 (UPDATE 1.11)

Important note :
There has been one bug left in 1.1 that would throw an exception when you tried to attack a region that has an empty divison assigned. This is an important issue but only needs an updated exe, so I quickly uploaded a zip that includes the game’s .exe that you just need to replace. Note that I also updated the full installer to 1.11!

Installer Win32 Installer for Projekt “W” – Phase 1 – Version 1.2 (~33 MBytes) ([download#34#hits] Downloads)
Installer Exe-Patch to 1.11 (~500 KBytes, ZIP) ([download#36#hits] Downloads)
Note : You only need this update if you have version 1.1 installed!

As promised, here is patch 1.1 for Projekt “W” – Phase 1. Sadly there have been several bugs and problems within the first release and this release should correct most of the bugs. If you have version 1.01 installed (the hotfixed one) you only need the patch. If you don’t have it installed at all I also updated the complete package to the most recent patch.

Installer Patch from 1.01 to 1.1 (Win32 Installer, ~3.5 MBytes) ([download#35#hits] Downloads)

You can find the patchlog for 1.1 over here.

Projekt “W” – Phase 1 – Hotfix 1.01

As usual I screwed up the release atleast partially. Besides crashing with resolutions of aspect ratio 5:4 (e.g. 1280×1024) I also forgot to include the music files for winning and loosing the game, so if you did and had music enabled it would crash.
So I reuploaded the game with these fixes. I would have provided a patch but that would take it’s time so if you encounter any of the above problems please redownload it (direct download link).

Note : If you only have problems crashing when the game tries to play the winning/loosing music it’s also sufficent to disable music in the options menu so you don’t need to redownload it.

Update : As pointed at in a forum there are several problems with the hotseat-mode that may stop you from finishing such a game. I’m currently working on the first patch for the game that’ll fix the problems with the hotseat-mode.

Projekt “W” – Phase 1 – Release!

After a year of work it’s time to celebrate the release of the most complex and ambitious of my programming career! Project “W” – Phase 1 is finally here and free for you to download and play!

Head over to the game’s new page and grab a copy of the game (Windows 32, Installer, ~30 MBytes, includes german and english). The page also includes a lot of information on the game itself as well as a bunch of new screenshots, so while downloading it you can read through the page and browse the shots. It’s also recommended to read the included manual after the is installed as it shows how to play and how the user interface of the game works.

So if you like turn-based strategy games (like I did and still do) feel free to give Projekt “W” a try and tell me what you think. Please note that this is not a commercial game made by dozens of people and that I don’t own a full QA-department so there may (and mostly will) be bugs and exploits in the game though I did a lot of testing (much more than with my other projces) to assure that it works on most systems. I’m also sure that not everyone of you will be happy with the balancing but I’ll listen to your feedback and if necessary patch the game to fix problems and do some balancing!

Have fun!
